So over the past few weeks (which shouldn’t have been so long, but that’s another story) I’ve been working on a publication for SMU’s School of Law as a favour for a friend. It’s been a really good refresher course on grid-based layout in print media — I’d been working with screen for so long it took me a while to readjust back to something physical. And it’s been really liberating.
Which brought me back to a book I read in school three years ago — Making and Breaking the Grid: A Graphic Design Layout Workshop (yeah, it’s a mouthful) by Timothy Samara. The gist of it was that you can’t break the grid until you learn how to use it first, and this project reminded me of that. Couldn’t have come at a better time, really, when I’m intending to get back into the grind of things. The thing is that even when you break a grid, you still have some sort of underlying pattern or that’s guiding your layout… I haven’t had this much fun pulling all-nighters in a while.
That, and I got a really neat booklet on several grid systems in use today. Thanks, J.
post some previews when it’s out!
