About

2009:

Joshua Barker Tan does, among other things, music; writing; design; (most recently) acting; and is currently in London studying Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, where he has developed a taste for Guinness. He enjoys music, mee pok, dark chocolate and a good scotch + soda. He isn’t looking for a job at the moment, but if you’d like him to write or edit things for your publication, online or print, drop him an email.

2008:

Hello, I’m Joshua; some people call me Jbarks, Barker, Barks or some variant thereof, others just say “dude”. I was given the (very unorthodox) middle name by a friend called Ernest when we were sophmores in design school.

I’ve just finished 2 years of open secrets working for the Singapore government and I’m looking forward to whatever lies ahead. Before that, I graduated with a Diploma in Visual Communication from Temasek Design School. I love print, typography, photography and would love to meet Eugene Richards, Matthew Carter, Paula Scher and Jim Marshall before I die. Or in heaven, if I don’t get to see them beforehand.

I’m certified in Laser-class boats, but I haven’t touched one since high school. I’ve also briefly experienced a Cat Taipan (whoa) and a 420. I intend to get back in the boat some time before I turn 30; it’s quite an experience being out on the water by yourself.

I play bass guitar in The Fire Fight, and teach whenever I feel like it.

I like dark chocolate, red wine, a good scotch & soda, Basmati rice, communicating on the go, watches, basses, good food, dreaming, coffee (although I’m told it aggravates my panic disorder), short hair, Anna Stern, 30 Rock, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Death Cab for Cutie, MSTRKRFT, Sigur Rós, Stars, The Coup, The Roots, The Perishers, Travis, Wilco, and reading people.

If you’re looking to talk to me, I like a good drink and good company. Either way, I haven’t planned my future just yet.

2007:

My name’s Joshua; some people call me Jbarks, Barker, Barks or some variant thereof, others just say “dude”. I was given the (very unorthodox) second name by a friend called Ernest when we were freshmen in design school.

I attend Wesley Methodist Church.

I have one brother, a sister I never had and two dogs; a (very furry) Norwegian Buhund and a Golden Retriever.

I’m certified in Laser-class sailing boats, but I haven’t touched one since Secondary school. I’ve also briefly touched a Cat Taipan and a 420.

I studied at Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) before moving on to graduate with a Diploma in Visual Communication from Temasek Design School. I love print, typography and photography, and would love to meet Eugene Richards, Matthew Carter, Paula Scher and Jim Marshall before I die. Or in heaven, if I don’t get to see them beforehand.

I smoked for a few months in Secondary 3, then quit because I didn’t see the point in it. I lit up once or twice in the second year of design school, but still didn’t see the point. The parents don’t know… But I do like my Jägermeister.

I don’t really know what I want to do in life yet. I just know I want it to have something to do with print, or at the very least something near the creative field.

I used to blog at the Snog Blog.

I play the bass guitar in The Fire Fight. I also teach bass on occasion.

I am currently listening to (and influenced by) Jamiroquai, Via Audio, Bloc Party, The Roots, Matthew Sweet, Death Cab for Cutie and The Get Up Kids. I also like Samaire Armstrong and Nora Zehetner.

2006:

Hello, my name is Joshua. I respond to Joshua, Jbarks, Barks, or almost any permutation of “Joshua” and “Barker” you can think of. The other part of my name was given to me by the one and only Ernest Ho (go see his site for design and things) when we were freshmen in school. I decided to move back to my own server when I realised that Livejournal didn’t allow you to embed all sorts of Flash goodness on your pages. That, and the realisation that I still had about 10gb of free space (and loads more bandwidth) unused on my account.

I have one brother, a sister I never had and two dogs; a (very furry) Norwegian Buhund and a Golden Retriever. They’re both lazy, but the Retriever will eat almost anything you throw at him.

I studied at Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) before moving on to graduate with a Diploma in Visual Communication from Temasek Design School. I am currently serving my nation in the Commando HQ, which happens to be a 15-minute drive from my house. I love typography (very anal about it, actually. I cannot stand it when I see poor typesetting.) and photography, and would love to meet Eugene Richards, Matthew Carter, Paula Scher and Jim Marshall before I die. Or in heaven, if I don’t get to see them beforehand.

I attend Wesley Methodist Church, fill in on bass for Truth Ministries (which runs The Third Place) whenever they need someone and am active in Sonic Edge Ministries.

If I’m not designing, — and I haven’t been doing a lot of that lately; the army takes up a lot of your time — I enjoy playing the bass guitar. I play a Lakland 44-02 in Candy Apple Red with a maple neck, and a Japanese ’57 Reissue Precision Bass with Nordstrand pickups and a 3-ply black pickguard. I use Thomastik-Infeld strings. My effects chain runs as follows:

Custom Z.vex Woolly Mammoth » Korg DT-10 Tuner » Goosoniqueworx Citrus Compressor » Boss OC-2 Octave » Modified Boss BD-2 Blues Driver » Fulltone Bass-Drive » Boss LS-2 Line Selector (Ibanez SB7 Bass Synth » Line 6 Echo Park) » Behringer DI-400P Direct Box

I am currently listening to (and influenced by) Jamiroquai, Billy Talent, Maritime, Sufjan Stevens, The Whitest Boy Alive, Bloc Party, Matthew Sweet, David & The Citizens and The Get Up Kids. I also like girls with short hair like Samaire Armstrong and Nora Zehetner, or failing which, I’ll settle for Fiona Xie.

Yes Randy, this is awfully similar to yours. But you know I lubchoodeepdeep.
